RE: Compare - Maggie 2.7/QR, 2.6/R, 3.3/R & MGllla

Wow the 2.6Rs sound really good. I really wish they were not so rare. Will have to keep searching until I find a pair. I am in the UK, I found two pairs for sale in Italy and Holland recently but the prices were too high. - 1700 and 1800 euros!, - too much for speakers that could need servicing.

Back to the 2.7 and 3.3Rs which I have, - its a tough call actually, - the 3.3R is more transparent and obviously has more air/extension in the highs but the integration of the 2.7 drivers is very good and they sound very nice too when you get used to a sound that has a bit less treble extension than the 3 series ribbon shod speakers. Like I said before the 2.7salso have a lot of potential for crossover upgrades as the stock parts are cheaper than those used in the 3 series speakers. I am going to try PGs 2 way crossover mod for the 2.7s soon with better parts, - will report how I get on. Might also try active biamping (but still 3 way) or even triamping with them soon as well.

As for what to get Bob, - Its true that something like the IIIa's do offer very good value for the used prices they sometimes go for, and on paper it is more speaker for the money than a pair of 1.6s. But I mean like others have said any Maggies are good to get for a decent price. Having bought the used 3.3R myself and having current delamination problems I would receommend you look at whatever you intend to buy if possible and check the back for delamination (should be able to see with a torch if the coils are coming off). Its of course fine to buy a pair with delamination but you have to bear in mind its doing take some time/diy to fix them or the expense of sending them back to Magnepan. If you can find a pair without delamination (any model) I reccomend you go for them if the price is good.

The 2.6r is the one to really look out for though as its rare. And the 2.7QR as well I guess as its also not that common and also highly thought due to the great driver interation. The IIIa is more common than these and is a very good value used buy, - but it probably unlikely you would find a pair of IIIa's without some delamination though due to the age, - but check it out. A pair of used 1.6s I reckon would be a good buy if you could find a pair without delam problems.

Cheers,
Colin
