RE: Compare - Maggie 2.7/QR, 2.6/R, 3.3/R & MGllla

Well, I sought out the 2.6's so you know where I'm coming from. But they are not easy to come by. I waited a few months for a pair to show up on Audiogon and bought them even knowing that they had work to be done on them. The key difference to me is the ribbon driver extends down below 1000 Hz. That's the lowest crossover point for the true ribbon in the Magnepan family. I settled on a crossover point of 778 Hz with a 24 db L-R crossover and can play them louder than I care to listen to with no hint that the drivers are being overdriven.

You get that and 608 square inches of planar bass and the next step up from that is the MG20 series or certain models of the Tympanies. My greatest endorsement for the 2.6 is that I am done with changing models at this point. I have no illusions that these are the last word in Magnepan's and neither would they be everyones preference. But I do not ever come away from an evening of music anymore without being amazed at how good they sound at some point.

Having said this I still believe that the best deal on the used Magnepan market is the IIIa's. Not uncommon to see those selling for $600. Even if you have to refurb them it is still less than a pair of 1.7's. And I would be very skeptical that the 1.7's could out perform the IIIa model. I'm sure some people might prefer a 1.7 but I think that a large majority would choose a IIIa for sound quality. Since that model has been updated by the 3.3 then the 3.5 and then the 3.6 the value of the IIIa has been driven down a great deal. Even so I would still prefer an active IIIa to a stock 3.6. Take a long look at all that Andyr did with his IIIa's and you would have a great templet for modification possibilities.
