I've reached the end of my tether. I've been braiding these cat5 cables for a year now, im sick of it. Want to improve the sound of my TNT Tripple Ts and have recently been reading lots about the virtues of Anticables. As usual, I'll be going the cheapskate route and not getting the genuine article and constructing my own.
I'll get 12gauge solid core wire with as little insulation on as possible; enamelled wire if I can get a hold of it. I could simply twist it up, as many people are doing with their Anticables, but I was thinking of another design.
What's the general concensus on spacing speaker cable conductors? I've come across some people saying they've spaced their Anticable conductors, while other cables are manufactured that way. My idea is to spiral them around hollow, plastic tubing (with cotton in between it and the conductors, for damping and spacing) just like in CVHs DIY interconnects - a double-helix construction. The conductors will be about 3/4" apart.
So, inductance will be up, but is that an issue? Capacitance will be down, but will that be noticable? Should I just keep the wires straight and spaced? Any opinions and experiences will be much appreciated, as usual, thanks.

have you ever tried braiding 12 gauge solid core cable ? That's a bitch, believe me cuz I've done it in a three wire braid for my power lines. I won't ever do it again, believe me.
Your proposed design configuration sounds similar to a Kimber cable. Why not try their cheaper stuff. All you need to do is buy it a length about 25% longer than you need and then you can push the brad together to puff it up and then you can side in a piece of plastic tubing. In fact to assess the geometry the wire will stay puffed up as long as you don't step on it or pull it tight. You can hear interesting differences.

3 braid is easy.... :)... yah right...I've done quad braid speaker cables and I even inserted the 12ga enameled magnet wire into individual ptfe (teflon) tubing before braiding.
I play Flamenco guitar so I have very strong and dexterious hands and tough calousus as well. Once you get the rythm of the sequences down, it's just a matter of time.... just like making music.
A bear to work with, but not that all difficult if you handle the wire rather than let the wire handle you.
Would definately do it again for any length needed. Price is extremely low compared to commercial cables and imo sounds equal to or better to some very pricey XLO reference stuff I bought a while back.

Have you tried the even more time involved Chris VH CAT cables? The triple T's only take a few minutes to make. I've given them away to my friends and relatives. For the people that really care about good sound I've done the 27 pair braiding pattern. On basic systems the Triple T's are a real improvement but the braided ones don't reveal much more. On a better system you can hear the difference with the VH design.
Puhleeze!
Firstly, you shouldn't have wasted your time braiding Cat5 cables. You could've bought Belden 1585lc (all teflon insulation, including the jacket) and used one wire in each twisted pair as '+ve' and the other as '-ve'.
Or you could've bought Belden 1585a and stripped the PVC jacket off and done the same thing. (These are pretty seriously good speaker cables. :-)) )
However, if you want to " go over to the dark side " then FFS don't use 12g magnet wire ... I personally wouldn't go any thicker than 21g - so use several strands each run, if you really think you need the cross-sectional area.

Andy
I made an 8 foot pair of the full braided cat5 speaker cables in about a week of evenings. How can it take a year - are you running them throughout the whole house?
I have anti-cables sitting in the box along with CAT5 and a bunch of others.
You won't believe how good they are unless you try them. My entire ssytem is now wired with these ICs and speaker cables. Fun to build, too. Search here for tips. The original article is linked.
I have a newbie question on the white lightning moonshine speaker cables. What happens when you use two of the conductors for positive, and only one for negative? Is there certain amp/speaker combo, that these wires would not work for?I would like to try them though, as well as the anti-cables.

Conventional wisdom, double the return leg. That's what I did for both cables and ICs and I have yet to hear anything not wildly expensive as good. 'course that's just me.
Hey Mr. Woods, when do I get my twenty bucks?
