720 KDWN Las Vegas will go dark at the end of February. KDWN's 50 kilowatt signal was a pre-internet flame thrower throughout most of Western North America. One of its' most popular shows was "Stardust Line" from Stardust Casino's sports book. Although intended for gamblers, it had plenty of inside sports information for fans too. During boxing's heyday, they provided first-on-the-scene coverage after every historic Vegas championship title fight. Stardust Casino closed in 2006. KDWN also carried Las Vegas Running Rebel basketball during Jerry Tarkanian era. Several years ago, as civilization encroached on KDWN's transmitter site, power was reduced from 50kw to 25kw daytime; 7.5kw nighttime. KDWN content will continue on a local FM HD sub-carrier. Wonder if west coast AM dxers will now be able to hear Chicago's WGN? ... 73s para Sactown
Follow Ups:
Receiving AM signals from the "air" with nothing more than a (long) wire antenna, a tuned coil and a detector diode is magic.
Heck, DXing AM (or SW) on a cold, dark winter night on a nice superheterodyne receiver (modern or very vintage) is plenty magic, too!I think I'll post a gratuitous photo of a low-end/mediocre (but adorable) general coverage radio.
all the best,

and find very few stations that are an interesting listen. It's mostly the same corporate programming from coast to coast. Blah, blah, blah.
Back in the 1960's while living on LI, I used to listen at night on a Zenith Royal 400 transistor radio to WWVA wheeling west virginia. Even though the content wasn't necessarily what I like, I loved that I could hear radio at night from West Virginia while living on LI. Back then life was good
One year after Audacy abandoned KDWN's long-time AM 720 Khz dial location, Audacy surrendered KDWN's license.
