Receiving AM signals from the "air" with nothing more than a (long) wire antenna, a tuned coil and a detector diode is magic.
Heck, DXing AM (or SW) on a cold, dark winter night on a nice superheterodyne receiver (modern or very vintage) is plenty magic, too!I think I'll post a gratuitous photo of a low-end/mediocre (but adorable) general coverage radio.

and find very few stations that are an interesting listen. It's mostly the same corporate programming from coast to coast. Blah, blah, blah.
Back in the 1960's while living on LI, I used to listen at night on a Zenith Royal 400 transistor radio to WWVA wheeling west virginia. Even though the content wasn't necessarily what I like, I loved that I could hear radio at night from West Virginia while living on LI. Back then life was good
