My limited experience is that it's "OK" but nothing special. Not at all like Dyna FM3. Mono only. "Unique" styling. Considering its age, an instrument alignment (sweep not peaking per Heath) is absolutely necessary AFTER restoration. I've got a couple of them laying around awaiting restoration that will probably never occur. Most valuable aspect of them are the 6AQ8s (if good) in the front end.
Follow Ups:
I guess it's again time to trot S. Bench's MPX adapter out. Mono only old tuners get upgraded easily enough.

the benefits of a valve front-end outweigh the MPX units in most old and simple vale tuners.
Resistance to overload from in-band and from strong out of band signals, which are rife these days
A good modern SS MPX kit with big film type coupling caps to sustain deep bass area good idea.

...seem to believe the Heath FM3 warrants the expense and effort of an outboard MPX decoder let alone a complete rebuild and alignment. Apparently your experience with the tuner is significantly more positive than mine. Maybe I should reevaluate? Care to relate your experience with the Heath FM3?
The Bench MPX decoder is easy enough, but if the Heath tuner is a POS, don't bother.

It's just that in my experience valve FM front ends do have some advantages. If you drive them real hard, and well.
