On the left is the long and short plate Mullard 12ax7. On the right is the smooth and ribbed plate Telefunken 12ax7. In the middle is a newer Sylvania 12ax7. I know Sylvania made different 12ax7s but I've never listened carefully to any of them. Back in the day we used mostly Mullards and Telefunkens. I do remembering liking the black plate RCA 12ax7s.I don't use 12ax7s in my system these days. I can sub a 12ax7 for a 6sl7 in my phono pre using this adapter if I want/need a little more gain.

Edits: 03/06/25Follow Ups:
the one I found is like the middle tube (faded and screwed up Blue lettering), nothing else)
Got all kinds of other tubes, including RCA's, Tele's Etc.
This one Sylvania sounds really NICE
I also have plenty Octals of Sylvania's, never found a 9 pin before
because I have about 100 NOS Sylvania 12ax7s, some with red paint and some with green paint, with that same plate structure.
I think the blue paint was the last Sylvania tubes before ECG but I'm not sure.
