On the left is the long and short plate Mullard 12ax7. On the right is the smooth and ribbed plate Telefunken 12ax7. In the middle is a newer Sylvania 12ax7. I know Sylvania made different 12ax7s but I've never listened carefully to any of them. Back in the day we used mostly Mullards and Telefunkens. I do remembering liking the black plate RCA 12ax7s.

I don't use 12ax7s in my system these days. I can sub a 12ax7 for a 6sl7 in my phono pre using this adapter if I want/need a little more gain.

the one I found is like the middle tube (faded and screwed up Blue lettering), nothing else)
Got all kinds of other tubes, including RCA's, Tele's Etc.
This one Sylvania sounds really NICE
I also have plenty Octals of Sylvania's, never found a 9 pin before
because I have about 100 NOS Sylvania 12ax7s, some with red paint and some with green paint, with that same plate structure.
I think the blue paint was the last Sylvania tubes before ECG but I'm not sure.

I would have to scrounge to find even a couple well-used 12AX7s. My preamp uses six of them, so I wired it for Russian 6N2P instead.

Besides the 100 NOS NIB Sylvania 12ax7s, here's my stash of Mullard and Telefunken 12ax7s. Most are used but they test good on my Hickok 539b. I have a few NOS Telefunken 12ax7s and about 12 EI 12ax7s made with the Telefunken tooling in Yugoslavia. Also some NOS Amperex 12ax7s.I also have a drawer full of American made 12ax7s with other assorted tubes mixed in.

That is only the 12ax7s. I have hordes of output tubes and rectifier tubes.
Here's some. All but the Genalex U52 are Mullard 5ar4s. The four RCA boxes on the right are NOS NIB Mullards.

There is quite a bit more.
It only took about 55 years to collect these. :-)Tre'

I think 95% of the tubes are owned by 10% of the audiophiles. Which is why some are scarce for a neophyte.

I just sold my 45 amps and have huge cache of them that I bought about 20 years ago. The inflation rate of tubes are crazy these day.
You must have enough to sell on eBay to fund a trip around the world.

I've got a stash too, although not so many of one type as you do in that box of 12AX7s. (I may be close with 6SN7s,) My problem is getting up the energy to advertise the ones I don't want or will never need. Then the prospect of packing and mailing. For the financial return, it hardly seems worth the effort. Last time I did make an effort, I ended up giving some tubes away for free.

I've started selling off some of my excess on the big auction site. My plans for future projects have become clearer lately, and I can see the types that are less likely to be useful. Selling those off will help to fund my new amps and preamps. :)
That's how I need to think. If I sell enough tubes I can get a nice new phono cartridge and maybe a good universal player.
The trouble is, that is not motivation for me. I can afford both already.

I completely understand that. OTOH, it's my goal to continue building the best gear I can, and I hope it might outlive me and eventually be appreciated by others in the family. Leaving behind a hoard of tubes won't benefit anyone, in fact it would be a burden, so I'm trying to find a better balance. To tell the truth, I don't really need more equipment at this point. My latest preamp is nearly perfect, and other than a few tweaks here and there, I doubt it can be bettered in any significant way. I feel the same about the headphone amp and main amp that I'm using. They're so good, even my restored Citation v is now on standby and up for sale locally. I love building gear though and don't intend to spend my final years sitting around the house watching TV. I just need to keep enough of the most useful tubes and components to feed this hobby. :)
I have one box plate 12AX7 (Printing screwed up, missing) probably 70's it also has copper rods, no box, in comparison to earlier 12ax7's Sylvania's (ribbed plate?)
Sound and quality wise?
