Remote troubleshooting is just a guess, but I'll guess you had a tantalum in backwards. They take about a minute or less to overheat and short out. It likely took something else out with it, maybe whatever was providing the signal upstream. It could even have opened a trace. Check that everything has power with a DVM, and do a careful visual check with a magnifier everywhere from the power supply on. If you have a scope, trace back from the opamp input, looking for signal. Mods without test equipment and a schematic are always a bit risky because when something goes wrong, it can be tough to find.
Follow Ups:
I was listening to a test tone track from a test cd after the opamp upgrade, and noticed a ticking at the high end of the spectrum.
About 5 ticks a second. You can hear it only at high frequencies. When I play a 20khz tone (which I can't hear) at a normal to high volume,
it sounds like something's arcing. Like if you held a spark plug wire close to an engine block while the motor was running.
What's going on?
Thanks.
Ned
Not a clue- that's sort of an odd one. Tube amps sometimes "motorboat" which can sound something like that, but I've never heard an opamp circuit do it. Are you sure it didn't do it before the mods? Five times a second is almost a buzz. Maybe something in the digital conversion? Do you have a scope?
No, unfortunately I have no scope. I don't know if it did it before the mod. I tried a spare player and didn't do it, so it's not the amps.
Could it be a diode?
Not a clue, though probably not a diode. You might try posting over on diyaudio.com and hope somebody has seen that sort of thing before.

You got it! When the tant blew, it took the trace with it.
Thanks for your help.
