Have had any luck with your MG12s...Room setup?
Follow Ups:
After much investigation, it turns out that the tweeter in the poorly speaker was rebuilt 'in the field'. I am the second owner, the previous owner bought them ex-demo from the distributor. I am fairly certain that he received them in this state, and that the distributor had them 'repaired' after clearly serious damage and then sold them in ill faith.
At this point, there is nothing I can do - without appropriate machinery there is no way that I can relay the aluminium any more evenly and competently than the last person that tried, so unless there is some magical solution, this may be the end of the road for this particular speaker. I live too far away from Magnepan for the cost of sending it back home for repair to be at all reasonable (might actually be more than buying a new one).
Question is, where can I get hold of a single left side MG12?! I'm thinking that I might just have to bite the bullet and perhaps buy a pair of new MMG's when they come out.
Man....well i have re-wired Magnepans....an i well say QR foil...Is ezer than wire to put down by the owner..an it only tuck about 30mi...Look the guy that did the re-foil may have left off a run up an down ..look at the good speakers an see if the tweeters are the same....that would give less output......
but re-foil... this may not be your cup of tea....
Anway... calling Magnepan an haveing them keep a eye out for a pr of 12s that one got kill...from some one...i Would go to Magnepa...
to bad well.... not to spend your $$$ but.... if you got a new pr of any Maggys the one 12 would be a killer center speaker...good luck
You think it's worth trying to refoil it myself if I order the part from magnepan?
Yes....the foil $$ last i got ...not the kit...was $7.50 US a roll..one roll would do two tweeters eze...you can get the 3M77 spary glue there i would think.... it is made for foil...wire not so much..well tweeter wire it ok...bass for get it...
spray lite cote...eze...
Johns point is a vary good one... polarity connected correctly... have magnepan send you lay outs for the pr of 12s so you can ck he may have got it crossed...it would cause this funky sound...good luck

I had expected them to offer the material so that you, at least, would have the option. Perhaps you should follow up on that tack and ask for it. I am sure they will agree. The decision to do it, itself, you can make later. At one point, I even considered converting my whole panel (the bass driver) to the same foil stuff, after Wendell encouraged the adventurous among us...that's another story. I then realized that, in my case, the loss of efficiency paired to the already lowered input (due to the PLLXO points I use) would kill the benefits.
In your case, the tweeter alone would only require some care and patience, if you decided to go that route. Who knows, perhaps you then get confident enough to be more adventurous!

Is the rebuilt tweeter section polarity connected correctly compared to the other? Are the two speakers phased correctly (matched ) to each other?
John, it is hard for me to really say but I had lengthy phone conversation with the OP and he seemed to have checked things right, to the extent that he could. Since the tweeter output difference issue could be measured separately, by channel, we know that it exists.
Which, to your point, does not mean it may be the ONLY issue. Many of us have been fooled by out-of-phase or by wrong polarity conditions for a while, along time. If one tinkers enough with the internals, it will happen by accident sooner or later. It takes even longer to detect it when it is just one speaker that has the drivers inverted and both speaker are playing. If one knows the system and the music well, it begins to rub the wrong way at some point. Given that the OP is only getting started, I would not discount what you say, even if it may be a separate issue.
Anyway, in our earlier exchanges I first saw pictures of the panels that indicated an older speaker, not new. He caught on to it and looked closer. That's when he realized that the tweeter foil could be the smoking gun. For privacy reasons, I don't post anything exchanged on email, unless mutually agreed, but perhaps he can post one of them.

Here's a pic of the rather poorly folded tweeter foil (the other speaker is immaculate)... The strips are also not properly parallel, wavering quite markedly in places. However, I must say that when I first got these speakers, I did not notice an imbalance of this type or magnitude. There was some distortion coming from some tape that had come loose and was buzzing, hence their going in for repair, but the lab that handled it insist that they didn't do anything other than clear this up.

Also, JBen mentioned that they looked somewhat aged. They were purchased from the distributor 2 1/2 years ago as an ex-demo model, but I now realise rather obviously that they could have been on demo duty for years. The SN is 151492-1/2 - anyone have any idea how old that makes them?
Yes, the foil MUST be exactly in-between the magnet rows. Otherwise You will loose sensitivity.

Then I guess that this doesn't cut the mustard...
The real question is, what are the chances of me being able to do it any more accurately?
That is really shoddy workmanship. You need to send that photo to magnepan and see if this can be repaid for free of just the cost of shipping.
This was not done by Magnepan. It was a botched up job by someone much later. Notice the foil turns, they are not like the factory's. Magnepan already has seen the picture and Wendell had someone contact the OP.
Unfortunately, being in Israel doesn't make things easy as far as repairs. The OP would have to attempt to redo this by himself. I gather he is not exactly thrilled with the local dealer.
I guess it's all related to Your ability to be accurate and precise in Your work.
:)
