I wish I could tell you more.I've never owned Stax but I've also never heard of anything exactly like this happening with any headphone.
I hear you on the headfi thing: Exuberance galore, but also too many "half-formed" opinions.
I would try contacting Stax directly, perhaps as a last resort. And if you do find out what the problem is be sure to post back here. The final diagnosis and solution to your problem needs to be stored in our archives for future reference.

I have t agree about hed fi .Too many immature voices over there. I don't know where these kids (obvious to me ) get the money to pony up for some of their set ups but it's more of a pissing contest than anything elese at times. You may learn a lot but tread with caution and a large grain of salt.
Yeah, it seems there are some pretty rich kids running around over there. Or maybe they forego owning automobiles and such and buy expensive hifi equipment instead?
I can't tell if they are high school or college age but they almost surely come from the boroughs rather than the 'hoods.
