I sometimes hear a crunchy sound in my SR-207 earspeakers, even when the energizer is powered down. It can happen when I twist my head quickly or move the earspeakers on my head. No sparks, no shocks. My Stax are the finest headphones I have ever heard. They are amazing.
Any ideas?

Keep up the good work, you should do well here.

This would get annoying real fast.
It was VERY disconcerting, at first. It has to do with breaking the seal between the head & earcup. An expert with head stats told me it's harmless.

It is as if much of the membership is male, between 18 & 30, and single. I,too, am surprised by the amount of equipment most of them have,

From preliminary research, this is a well-known occurrence, which is known as Stax farts. I kid you not.

Let 'em rip!!!
Sometimes the cables can make a noise like that when they rub together and/or against something else. Grab the cable and twist or shake it with the headphones on, notice what happens.
If the cable isn't the problem it's likely that the drivers themselves are loosening up.
Is such "loosening" a positive or a negative? The sound quality is unchanged. I bought them lightly used as an SRS-2170 system through eBay Canada. Complete packaging. Everything pristine.

I'm not a Stax expert though.
You might search the archives here for the posts of experienced Stax owners, try emailing one or two of them asking for help and advice.
You can also try posting your questions over at headfi.
Or try contacting Stax directly for technical support.
Shipping damage might be the culprit here but since you bought them used you are on your own now.
Good luck!
I try to avoid HeadFi. I have an account, but I never use it. Too many people holding too many half-formed opinions using too much mambo-jumbo wordage split into too many factions fanatically nursing too many pet beliefs. I might try Head Case. There are quite a few Stax users over there.
I don't think there is really anything "wrong" with them. The sound is sudden & loud, but not in the sense of something coming from the drivers. I wonder whether I am pulling a vacuum in the earcup & hearing any foam inserts or pads move. As I mentioned, it doesn't sound electrical, like a "zap!". It's happened with the earspeakers deenergized.

Don't worry about it, it is a normal sound. My SR202's do this also. Besides the very thin diaphragm, there's also a very thin dust cover and these things can rustle a bit when the air pressure changes, like when you move your head suddenly or gently press on the housing over the ear.
I wish I could tell you more.I've never owned Stax but I've also never heard of anything exactly like this happening with any headphone.
I hear you on the headfi thing: Exuberance galore, but also too many "half-formed" opinions.
I would try contacting Stax directly, perhaps as a last resort. And if you do find out what the problem is be sure to post back here. The final diagnosis and solution to your problem needs to be stored in our archives for future reference.

I have t agree about hed fi .Too many immature voices over there. I don't know where these kids (obvious to me ) get the money to pony up for some of their set ups but it's more of a pissing contest than anything elese at times. You may learn a lot but tread with caution and a large grain of salt.
Yeah, it seems there are some pretty rich kids running around over there. Or maybe they forego owning automobiles and such and buy expensive hifi equipment instead?
I can't tell if they are high school or college age but they almost surely come from the boroughs rather than the 'hoods.
