Hi, can anyone give their view and maybe some examples on what will happen-in the Hifi world with the new tariffs Trump has enacted...thanks....Mark Korda
Follow Ups:
used equipment will probably rise in price as demand shifts from new to used. At least that is what economic theory predicts.
I hope that is the case. I have *a lot* of vintage equipment that continues to rise in value...so if it goes up even more, better for me. Retirement is coming and all that and vintage equipment (like watches, wine, antiques) is a legitimate alternative investment.
62% chance we will be in a recession by this summer. Just a guess buying audio equipment will not be on most audiophiles minds.

Dealers will have a hard time moving product, the vast majority of which is imported at much higher costs (ultimately passed on to us). Buying new audio gear is almost a 100% discretionary expense which is, of course, the first to go when spending cuts are necessitated. ( with, of course, individual exceptions)

Transformers
Resistors
semiconductors
capacitors
wire
chassis
hardware
Vacuum tubes
This all for the simple fact that materials used in the American manufacturing of these parts often use imported materials. Even if they don't, the prices will be higher because there will be more competition for the materials.
For those into tube products, I think Western Electric makes tubes in the US but they are a smaller player. The larger players are Russia, China and the JJ plant in Solvakia. Sockets are often imported too.
We have our chassis made here in St. Paul and we have finishing done here in town too. Those vendors are all telling me we'll see higher prices for their work as raw material prices have become unpredictable. That's just one example.
In a nutshell, tariffs are a tax on those who import. Depending on how widespread the tax is, it can affect the entire population of the importing country, even if individuals in that country aren't importing anything. Those taxes simply go to the government, in this case the US Treasury.
The tax is never paid by the exporting country, no matter how much Trump tries to make it look that way.

I usually only buy used equipment.
Gonna eliminate the usually part.
Rest of you are on your own.
Good luck.

And what do you think will happen to used prices when people stop buying new? It will increase as well.
Lots of materials used in parts or the parts themselves are imported these days.
Final out of pocket price will be higher for all new purchased audio equipment, products. Including so called made in the USA audio equipment.
Using Audio Research for Example. I doubt ARC manufactures any of the components that are used in their equipment. All the electronic components in the equipment come from China, Taiwan, Japan, or other foreign country(s). More than likely Circuit boards as well. Power transformers and output transformer? Not sure. Metal fabrication? Face plates?
FYI it's not just the added tariff tax you will be paying for. There is also, for better words, A paper handling collection fee for collecting the tax and passing it onto the U.S. Treasury.
There has been several threads/posts on Audiogon from members experiences buying audio related products from Canada. One member posted a thread about an amp that he had purchased late last year from Canada. He received an email his Amp was being shipped. He was given a FedEx tracking number. The OP's question was about the U.S. Tariff tax on imports from Canada.
He thought, was actually told by the President, Canada paid the Tax. Several members posted it doesn't work that way. The OP would pay the Tax.
So The OP calls the place he purchased the amp from. The OP posted back he was told the price for the amp was the same price. No change.
No idea how things turned out for the OP. Agon deleted the thread. Same as they do for all tariff related threads.
Before the Thread was deleted a member posted he personally knew how it works. He bought some parts from a business in Canada. Received an email saying, items were shipped FedEx and given a tracking number.
Shortly after, he received an email from FedEx. FedEx said they had received his package. Before releasing it for shipment to him he needed to pay FedEx for the U.S. imposed Tariff tax of $$ + a handling service fee for the tax owed.
Just going from memory he ended up paying almost twice as much for the items he had purchased.
Buyer beware!
Tariffs are a tax imposed on the buyer in the country to which the goods are being imported.
This is simply because one country cannot force another to pay for goods to enter the former.
They taught this stuff in elementary school FWIW. Odd that so many people don't understand how tariffs work.
I don't think it will help ARC or McIntosh...
for those happy using 70s vintage Dynaco speakers and amplification. :)
Spot on
For the US: Just look at the tariffs imposed on the countries where your preferred audio components come from, and that will give you an idea of imminent price increases. Similarly, for components built in the US, check out where their parts come from, and you will see the likely amount of an increase.
So the end result will be decreased sales on everything except products made for the price-no-object customer, and a while of companies shutting down.
haven't bought schiff in years, so it won't really matter to you.
Sadly, this means that Nordost will likely be forced to increase the price of its Odin Gold Power Cable. How much north of $55000 can a consumer bear :-(
That's a joke, son.
