hi, jtimothya....once again, i'd just like to state that i felt that all those arms mentioned are very, very good.
for the record, i live day in and day out with one of those arms, but i have heard all the others in one system (albeit over a period of days).
i find it hard to be extremely explicit in terms of quantifying the difference for 2 reasons:
1) all the arms are excellent, so differences are subtle;
2) the main difference was emotional. the arms that i felt were in a different league did something hard to quantify but quite apparent -- they drew me into the music (in different ways from one another) in a manner that a couple of the other excellent (sme, triplanar) did not.mind you, the sme & triplanar sound quite detailed (as do the others), but in comparison -- and ONLY in direct comparison -- they also sounded "flat". flat/lifeless is a dramatic term and only meant in a relative sense.
for me, the difference was less than 1%, but my opinion is that in the final 1% is where the "magic" lies. it's the difference between listening to music and feeling emotionally connected.
had i never heard a schroeder/breuer/brinkmann 12, i could be happy with a triplanar/sme/etc. but for the same amount of money, and given that i did hear all of them under as similar circumstances as i'd ever come, then for me the choice was clear.
