see link below. It's quite clear that some isolation devices, e.g. tubedampers and turntable isolation, are very helpful and necessary.
It's also very clear that there are many aush devices that aren't, are based on pure vapor science, and that noone has been able to show exactly how minute micro vibration of a SS amp/preamp, or even CD player, can affect the sound. That is, noone has shown that micro vibrations into a circuit board causes electrical parts like caps, diodes, and resistors to deviate from their values, and thereby cause electrical deviations that change the sound.
It is obvious that intense vibrations cause electrical parts to fail in industrial applications or on things like air and space craft, and other situations where there are large-scale vibrations and impacts--but we're NOT talking of anything like the same magnitude of vibration here.
The many shibboleths could be put to sleep by simple measurements, like using accelerometers and lasers to evaluate how micro-level vibrations afect sound. When Stereophile next tests some isolation device, they should perform such tests to see whether they work. Simple: Play system without the isolation device under, say a SS preamp or CD player, check levels of vibration with accelerometers/laser; check again with isolation device.
But, in asking such questions you'll meet with the standard "You can't hear!" or "the changes just can't be measured (nonsense)" or "well, I can hear a difference" or other such nonsensical defenses of the treasured religious beliefs. Best you can do is point out that the Flat Earth Society has a membership drive. (http://www.flat-earth.org/)
The same goes for cable risers, coins on loudspeakers (maybe the VERY WORST of all), or placing little, round wooden discs on walls (Mpingo discs--actually is probably the worst.)
That said, try'em--and of you like'm, more power to you! If, in the end, it gets you to enjoy your music more, then you've advanced.
