Well, I did fill stands with lead shot before I found out about the light and rigid approach which was originally championed here by Ken Lyons of Neuance, and another manufacturer. I have to admit that at the time I was quite dubious but I eventually removed it (all 30+ kg) from my rack and speaker stands and replaced it with tightly wadded polyester batting. I would never go back to lead or sand. The sound does change, and you do lose weight in the bass, especially that 'thump in the chest' sort of impact. On the other hand, what you get is more defined and tonally more accurate, and I also think you actually get to hear a bit lower also. In other words, I think you gain a bit of extension without the mass. My theory is that the mass contributes to a boost at mid to high bass frequencies that masks the extreme low bass area slightly. I find the end result without mass loading more like the real sound of the instruments I've heard, at least the acoustic ones.
