Hi JBC,"1. Spikes - it seems to me that spikes couple gear to a supporting surface in stable way which helps to minimise vibration transmission from the supporting surface to the gear, while also allowing for energy drainage."
It isn't logical to assume a rigid coupling, as provided by spikes, will "minimize vibration transmission from the supporting surface". On the contrary, it will very efficiently transmit vibrations. You can prove this yourself quite easily by holding one hand atop a component supported by spikes while using the other hand to slap (or knock on) the surface on which the spikes sit. I promise you will feel the vibration.
The concept of "energy drainage" has been spoken of often on this site. Simply put, any path that allows vibrations to pass will do so in (at least) two directions, not just one. There ain't no drainage except for the wallets of the unsuspecting.
Happy Listening!
