Thanks for the link. I'll check it out.I guess there's two issues -
1. Spikes - it seems to me that spikes couple gear to a supporting surface in stable way which helps to minimise vibration transmission from the supporting surface to the gear, while also allowing for energy drainage.
2. Supporting surface - the coupling of the supporting surface to the gear determines resonance control (as well as energy drainage).
