I seem to recall it had something to do with storing the wood in brine as well. Anyway, being all this was in Venice use of local "materials" sound appropriate. Next time I see a violin I'll think "Ah, scampi!"As for modern violin makers, all I know comes from hearing an NPR interview with a couple of fairly big name (but not so big I remember just now) soloists who were concerned that Strads were nearing the end of their useful lives and no equivalent was on the horizon. Doesn't mean they were right, it's just what they said on the program.
