If you used real wood instead of MDF, I could easily believe this. Why? Because of a Scientific American article about 10 years ago where a guy at Univ of Utah solved the mystery of Stadavarious (sp??) violins. The mystery being why can no oner reporoduce their unique sound. It turns out the wood was aged in salt brine (sea water? Venice is rather damp!) then dried out before use. The effect somehow was to seal the end of the hollow wood fibers yet leave air inside. This prouduced million (billions?) of resonant cavities that create the unique sound of a Strad.Per the article, this fellows hobby is making violins and though he makes no claim to being a master craftsman can build violins that some musicians say are very close to Strads in sound.
SO! My guess is that if you built a speaker cabinet out of "real wood" rather than MDF or plywood, how you finish it could affect the sound by altering the resonance of the wood fibers. I only say "could" in the sense of "not to be dismissed out of hand".
