Damar is very soft unless mixed with other harder resins,
That is why it's used on oil paintings, so it is less likley
to crack on the surface of the canvas (higher CTE)
Therefore it is a poor choice if one is concerned about
wear and tear, scratches, etc.
For sheer toughness, polyurethanes win hands down (also some epoxies)
Tougher than any laquers including catalyzed.Laquers and shellac have the advantage of quick initial dry time
so dust is less likely to stick to your work.Oil varnishes are usually the slowest driers.
Piano manufacturers use UV cure polyesters which they spray
on really thick (except on soundboard) then it cures hard in about
3 seconds. Sorry, can't do that at home.
