The guys name is Nagyvary and he had a recipe for varnish made of shrimp shells wich contain a high amount of chitin.The chitin made a very hard varnish.
The recipe may have been very good, but
the notion that this was some secret recipe used by the
Cremonese makers is pretty much just B.S.It's interesting reading, but don't ever believe there are'nt
makers living right now and relatively unknown that can't make violins
as good and even surpassing the legendary Strads and Amatis, etc.
using various varnishes containing more standard resins,gums and oils.
