The most common thing I have experienced with mass loading a cone is that the voice coil may not stay linear. This may be especially true of cheaper drivers. I mass loaded 4 Dynaudio cones and two of the four became non-linear and started buzzing at tough music passages that had a lot of dynamics and bass combined. We are talking about in my opinion the most linear drivers made not being able to handle it. I agree with John about the misconception od sub cones needing to be super stiff. Even metal cones are going to flex. I would worry more about good quality drivers with low distortion.Clayton
