I'd look more carefully into the analog output section of your DAC. This is probably the only point in the system that you can really play around with and make a difference in the sound unless you want to re-engineer the whole thing (good for a project).You might try to refine the output impedance to more closely match the input impedance characteristics of the load you are driving. Also, look at the ouput as a control system and simulate the load you are driving then look at the output on a 'scope. Run a step pulse in and look at the damping and ringing as well as slew, etc.
