Okay, here the lowdown on Naim Amplifiers....

195.99.125.202

Hi all,

I have ranted about these so often before that I normally save myself teh hassle.

Anyway. Naim Amplifiers use a Circuit straight out of a early 70's Application handbook. This Circuit is inherently instable, has very poor distortion and especially TIM and IMD Performance.

The result, agressive, unpleasant and bright sound. They MUST sound like this by design. This incompentently designed basic circuit is then coupled to reasonably well dimensioned powersupplies. And a relatively heavy case.

It is then subjected to obscene amounts of Hyperbole by a few journalists and becomes suddenly "Hi-End".... I had the chance (or should I say the misfortune) to have to repair a number of Naim Amplifiers.

They all manage a pretty decent and tunefull bass with absolutely grotty everything else.... I'm sorry, but I cannot find (beyound "good bass") find anything positive to say about Naim Electronics.

The sound these Amplifers make from about 100HJz upwards can only be considered atrocious. Unless coupled to Speakers severely rolled off in the treble and to sources that are very warm (like for example a Linn LP-12 Turntable) these electronics are (IMHO) unlistenable.

The kind of Component quality and basic Design used may be accceptable in a $ 200 Japanese Amplfier, but not in what they purport to be.

Maybe you think this a bit more helpfull?

Ciao Thorsten
