Aha! so someone still makes non-complementary output stages! Interesting, I thought this was abandoned decades ago.
As to the regulator - I'd do as you did, using a zener-capacitance multiplier with healthy MOSFET pass transistors. And fit as much capacitors as possible in the primary filter (before regulator).
