Re: Regulated power supply for poweramplifier

200.80.2.114

Hi!

You will find a version of the Ryan regulator, though for low current, applied on one of Nelson Pass amplifiers. Take a look at his page:

http://www.passlabs.com/projects/a75_2_4.htm

As far as I know it was the only amp where NP used a regulator. Just eliminate the doubler part on the left, that is all behind D2/C6 and D4/C7. Then you may have an idea of the whole circuit. Pass used it on the A75 to regulate the low current side of it.

Ryan's circuit was a bit more complex and had some voltage adjustment. It was designed for the Adcom 555 amp, but it can be adapted for many designs.

The other power regulator published on the former The Audio Amateur was designed by James Boak. Pity they didn't get to make a comparison of these two designs to see how they sounded.

Most designers prefer to use a regulator on the low current side of the amp, and that certainly can be arranged on the AKSA: it's only a question of cutting two pcb tracks. If not you will need two or more pairs of power transistors at the regulator's output, whatever the design, to handle the high current.

Apparently you should use a power amp as regulator that has an even wider bandwidth than the amp it's powering. You just add a reference (Z1 and Z2 on the A75) from which to build up to your voltage.

You did not mention which was the regulator you tested to decide that was the way to go. Or you are just guessing it might be an improvement to regulate it all?
