Re: Sorbothane mat is a bit sticky

64.20.15.128

Had I known that I would receive such a petulant and snotty reply, I wouldn't have posted here. I thought this board
was the home of polite discourse.

At any rate, sorbothane platter mats were used, yes, because sorbothane absorbs vibrations, but they do it by
coupling the record to the mat and to the platter, allowing vibrations or resonances to be conducted away from the
LP's surface. These principles are well known and were talked about endlessly in the hi-fi mags of the 70's and 80's.
Even the instructions that came with sorbothane mats covered the business of removing the mat from a platter (if
need be) after it had been stuck down - and cleaning dust from the mat so that the LP would adhere. I remember
articles describing methods of cleaning sorbothane mats so that they would maintain their stickiness.

We're talking about very tiny vibrations on a vinyl LP that weighs only a few ounces. It seems obvious to me that
these vibrations are better damped when maximum contact is maintained between the record and the mat - and the
platter, i.e. when it's stuck on. (This would not be a worry with a machine weighing thousands of pounds.) This is
similar to the reason why better turntables have spindle clamps and/or concave platters, and/or vacuum platters.
Along these lines, some high end 'tables have acrylic platters because the acrylic plastic has similar resonance
characteristics to vinyl and will more easily "sink" the vibrations away from the record - if it's properly coupled to the
platter. Sorbothane mats are a way to get that kind of record to platter connection and damping on 'tables that don't
have those features. Indeed, with my concave platter, there is a definite improvement to the sound of an LP when I
screw down the spindle clamp, sticking the LP to the sorbothane mat, over just letting the LP lay loosely on top of
the platter.
