its a question of mechanical coupling to facilitate effective dissipation of spurious energy from the LP to the mat, and the platter to the mat, but the mat will allow very little transfer betwixt platter and LP - thus breaking an energy feedback loop.The principle is similar to a well damped clamp.
However, YYMV - some like the sound, others don't. Take a look in the Vinyl Asylum..
