Over the DVD spin motor the effect takes maybe 30 minutes to really take full effect. You can see the effect immediately but the full effect take a a while to sort of "saturate" the machine.
I have the Desolation of Smaug on repeat, and it is a sort of good test because it is a very dark movie with lots of shadows (aso CGI so more detail can be inserted without worrying about depth of field for the camera: Avatar ia also a good test). The alexandrite certainly helps the delineation of the blacks. The pictures are much more three D, and again fine detail is clearly evident: hair detail, the shingles on the rooftops etc. The group scenes running through the forest are also more vivid but not in an unnatural way, just very pleasing and realistic.
