Alexandrite does recharge with light ,so ordered a bunch of LEDs. My Nebo flashlight had UV, white light, green light, and a red laser all in one unit. white light worked the best, and if left continuously on the effect does not fade.
Ordered some power supplies but they haven't come in yet. so rigged up some basic thing using a 9V battery and a resister and the LED. Works quite well, especially over CD/DVD spin motors, even outside the chassis. Dynamic range increases and there is better definition to the trailing edge of the notes, like the music is coming through a quieter background.
Curiously in playing around with the box, a plastic project box ( black ABS) seems to really cut down the top end, but seeing the flashing light is a bit more irritating for me. Went to a craft type cheap wooden box and that seems to work well (pine wood).
Also curious is that inserting the battery into the cobbed together device sitting on the sofa seems to help the sound also. Again perhaps related to the Stein harmonizers? Don't really know the Stein is a bit rich for my blood.
Since it worked well over the CD player spin motor tried on the video system. Worked well there, too. Not really dramatic, but the contrast and black level gradations increased, giving a more 3D pictures and better color saturation with better fine gradations.
Had the 9 V battery hookup running now for about 6 hours and everything is still working but want a AC wall wart for long term use.
