Had the breaker panel replaced last November for no reason except the panels were old and I wanted to upgrade the service. All is well until April. In the middle of the night there is a surge (I thought) that took out six surge suppressors in my house. In the middle of the next morning the power goes out in the neighborhood and I'm thinking that the powerco took the grid down to fix whatever causes the surge.
Ever since the power came back, I've been experiencing transient surges and sags on the power line. Lights will dim or brighten and then return to normal. I called the powerco this morning and the tech came out and re-attached my neutral, intimating that the electrician who installed the new breaker panel forgot to clean the powerco neutral before connecting it at my meter head. The voltage was reading 121 on both legs as he left.
Again tonight I'm getting surges and sags. I connected my Fluke during one 10 minute episode and measured a min of 102V and a max of 139V. The surges seem to last longer than the sags. I watched one surge tonight last for about a minute while the surges are momentary, a couple of seconds at most. I've had the scope on the line and the waveform looks normal even during a surge.
I've been in the breaker panel and all the neutrals seem to be tight and all the hots are too. It's not my fridge, I've documented this happening when it's not running. It's not the A/C,it began before the A/C season. I'm at a loss. Could I perhaps have a loose neutral somewhere in the house wiring? What should be my next step?
