So, you've got a pair of Cis?! Yeah, not quite like your big, more technically ambitious Infinitys. The old Peter Snell-designed Type C I've found to be excellent. I prefer the Ci to the Es, Js, and Ks, these latter three still living on with Audio Note. Nice testament, I think, to the the designs of these speakers, but I like the Ci best.
FWIW, I bumped into Stereophile's series of reviews on the Snell Type A, a speaker they called perhaps the most important speaker of the decade (that would be the 1980s). In this series the Cis were mentioned as being excellent, and not to be missed hiding under the shadow of the A's reputation.
Still, the original Cs tend to be the speaker equivalent of a white elephant. You see them, when you see them, not garnering much attention and can often be had for very little money. Of course, the foam woofer surrounds are always rotted by now, and maintaining the original mass-tuning of the woofer can make this repair a bit tricky.
The speaker doesn't use pricey or exotic drivers, and the xover is loaded with electrolytics, plus there is no provision for spikes. Despite all this, the speaker still sounds very good.
I'm going to replace the wiring, the binding posts, the electroyic caps, and the cheap resistors. I'm also going to provide provision for spikes. We'll see what comes of all this.
Cheers,
- SJ
