This may seem like a brushoff, but if you really want to understand room acoustics, the book to read is The Master Handbook of Acoustics. It is geared toward treating small rooms (small compared to music halls). It may seem like a long read--600 pages--but if you take the time, you will understand why things happen the way they do. Without that understanding, you can benefit from directives like, "use bass traps and put absorption panels at first reflection points", but they won't make all that much sense. It's a good read too. I found it fun.
However: use bass traps. I'm less convinced about absorption at the first reflection points, but I don't think that you can go wrong with bass traps in a small room.
