the "ringing" of the 12"x12" samples of various marble, granites and sandstones by dangling them loosly from a cornet and tapping on them. There are hundreds of samples as several stores in my home town (San Rafael, California). A wooden or hard rawhide mallet is best for tapping the the stone slabs.

You will hear a vast range of audible responses. Some thud, but many ring very noticeably. Those that ring will obviously resonate under your components. (Most marble slabs I have checked ring pretty noticeably. granite and sandstone are generally much better.)

Doesn't it make sense to start with the "deadest" slab of stone you can find, rather than setting your gear on a something that "rings like a bell" and then trying to damp it?
