A paper towel (or 2) will also work. The key is to make sure that you use something that will compress well under anything like this--you want as even weight distribution as you possibly can. Things like paper towels will compress unevenly if necessary (as is the case when using uneven surfaces such as marble and granite) and will protect the equipment underneath.
Of course, try a few different things and see what you like the most. I personally couldn't tell the difference between paper towels and rubber feet and so went with the towel for the concrete slab on top of my sub.
