Sean, I think that DarrylINZ and Eric Ventura said it all. It will take extensive trial and error to determine which combination of things is going to result in the "best" overall sound.
I would like to reiterate a few points that were made before as well as add a few of my own--
1. Separate your DAC/DVDP. You may be getting interference
2. Your DVDP does not necessarily make a bad transport. My Sony DVP-7700 makes an excellent transport.
3. Try the slabs with your sub. I have an M&K MX200 which I have sandwiched with concrete blocks purchased from Lowe's for under $10 total. Mind you the MX200 is built extremely solidly to begin with, but I sometimes think I can hear a difference, particularly with HT "blow 'em up" material.
4. Always be cautious when opening up your gear. Often just opening the case will void your warranty.
You've got the right idea--let your ears be your guide. It matters not what others think of your tweaks. What ultimately matters is what YOU hear, NOT what others think. After all, it's YOUR system! Your next step will be to start with room treatments. If you think component tweaks made a difference, wait until you start playing with the room!
Good luck, and as always, do please keep us posted!
