I use a sheet of 1.5 mm neoprene between a heavy chopping board and my CDP.Since the idea was to damp the top, I figured that a layer around the same size as the board was best since feet (rubber or felt) would load the top unevenly at the points of contact and might still allow some vibration, albeit at a different frequency. Muzikmike's leather use sounds like it relies on a pad similar to mine.
Before I got the neoprene, I used a sheet of bubblewrap with the flat side in contact with the CDP. I can't tell if I get any advantage with the neoprene over the bubblewrap but it looks better and is a lot cheaper. You could try bubblewrap first to see if you notice an improvement before looking for something less noticeable and more permanent.
