1. Think system matching. You need to get things that work well together. Remember, you are looking for a good system. With the right synergy a cheap system can sound great.2. Lose the Monster Cable. Nothing you do will make a bigger difference than this. I highly recommend Wireworld interconnects, they make several models below $50. But you will need to listen to them since, to me, they sounded quite different from each other. I actually bought a less expensive pair than I had budgeted for because it sounded better in my system.
3. Dedicated power circuit: 15amp breaker, 10 guage wire and hospital outlet. This is a Saturday DIY if you are handy and only costs like $30. Search the archives here to find more tips on this. I did this in an older house where the wiring wasn't all that great and the difference was much greater than I expected.
4. Consider shotgunned runs of 16-14ga speaker cable.
