I totally agree with your feelings about switches. My favorite are solid silver switches which are very expensive and still sound worse than direct connections any day of the week.
And a good pot has the potential of sounding as good or better than a stepped attenuator. You just have to be brave and try your options and trust what your ears are telling you.
I was not expecting a big difference between the cermet pot and the ALPS Black Beauty Pots. Boy was I 100% wrong!
