symposium clone for turntable plinth

Not sure if this is a tweak or vinyl question, but I decided to try here first.

I just bought an Empire 208 turntable, built in the early 60. Thing is heavy, solidly built, with precision bearings, and a very quiet motor.

It has an aluminum top, mounted in a walnut frame. I am planning to build a plinth to replace the frame.

The plinths I have seen, for Garrards and Empires and Lencos seem to mostly be made out of plywood that is glued together, with holes made for the motor and tonearm.

So last night, I was inspired, and wondered if a symposium clone would make a good plinth. I probably would make it around 4 inches thick, with layers of hardboard, MDF or plywood, gatorboard, MDF or plywood and hardboard. I would leave out the aluminum top and bottom for now, might try an aluminum bottom in the future.

So, is this a good idea, or is it crazy? Once I build something, it is done, so I am just going to make one plinth, for better or worse. The alternative can be seen in the link
