You hit the nail on the head. What speakers...The trick will obviously work to some degree if the 180 degree shift makes the tweeter phase closer to that of the lower driver in essential frequency bands (the phase alignement is frequency dependent unnless the voicecoils are aligned physically), and far from all speakers are phase aligned.
