I suspect that ebony isn't a broad band damper. I suspect it simply doesn't add as strong a resonant signature as other woods which would definitely make it a reasonable choice if you're going to use wood.I seem to have come full circle back to using shelves after being shelfless for years. I'm currently using a Grand Prix Audio Monaco base unit with 2 of their Formula composite shelves (carbon fibre/kevlar/some proprietary inner layer) and things have never sounded as good as they currently do. The GPA approach definitely does work brilliantly.
