This world is actually the best of all possible worlds - it's the one we have. A world in the hand is worth a lot more than a universe that doesn't exist.I have no experience with ebony, apart from it's use for the fingerboard of my guitar. If, as you say, ebony "…except for an inclination to help more clearly reveal natural definition and timbre, seems to impose no detectable coloration of its own", then I would tend to explain that inclination to more clearly reveal natural definition and timbre in terms of ebony adding much less resonance to what's going on. I don't think adding something ever gives more natural definition and timbre, but I do think that substituting something that adds a lot less for something that is more resonant nearly always does result in that kind of improvement.
