One must be resourceful when modifying amps.

I think until you can replace the main-PS caps with something LOTS better, such as Solen 'propylenes, I'd not replace them. Work on bypassing them. IMO the more 3- to 4-star* capacitance you can add to the 1-star 'lytics, the better the amp will sound. Look thru Percy's listing of SCR/Solen and Axon caps to see what 400V. or 630V. caps you could fit in there. (BTW the link to your pic no longer works.) For clues on how to get them in, check the various pics on my linked page. BTW I've changed my alleged mind about a bypass for the Solens--I suggest you use the 0.22 NorthCreek Harmonys, here http://www.northcreekmusic.com/Zen.html . They're plenty good enough and excellent values at only $3 each. I suggest you order may 8 or 10 (thereby receiving the lower price), as you'll be doing more of this. All of the bypass caps get installed in parallel with the main cap; the NC's white lead is to its outer foil layer and should be installed to ground.

Maybe you could e-mail me another pic showing that PS-cap cavity and we can continue this privately...jeffreybehr(at)cox(dot)net. I MIGHT even be able to dig up an amp to help.

* I use the 5-star system to describe quality, with 1 =poor, 2 = fair, 3 = good, 4 = very good, and 5 = excellent. There's 5+ too, meaning SOTA and as good as money can buy. I suppose in caps, those would be Chris VenHaus's V-Cap teflon-film tin-foils (TFTFs). At $72 each for 0.22s, they ought to be SOTA! http://v-cap.com/tefloncapacitors.html
