Yes you are right that system matching is the most critical component to overall righteous sound reproduction.I am in it for the Soul, the passion, and the emotion of live music.
And WBT can be so good, and so revealing that it shows all the faults of mid-fi equipment. If you have really well built stuff the WBT should sound spectacular but not always.
I heard a 60 thousand dollar system that sounded like kitty litter because everything from source to speaker was so analytical that you thought Freud was translating the music to German.
Yuch....
So it does not matter how much you spend. It matters how well you balance the weak points of your stuff with the strong points of the sources, amps, speakers, and ancillary components.
This is why we all spend so much time and money and sweat and tears. And why we come back the next day to try harder....
