DIY Morality

> diy usualy does start that way, but how does that make it right?

Because it's how progress works. Someone takes a gadget apart, finds out how it works, and builds a better one. In the modern cases it often happens publicly. It goes in the opposite direction all the time, where a company productizes a publicly available tweak (Green pens, CD demagnetizers, etc...)

There's also a concept called "First sale," which says when you buy something, it belongs to you, and you can do whatever you want with it. You can resell it, take it apart, talk to your friends about it, whatever. You may *not* sell copies of it, if it is a copyrighted or patented device (PCB's, software, etc...)

> what you're saying is like it's ok to clone a "descrambler box" to get cable/satellite yourself, as long as you don't sell the boxes you make to others..

Er, not quite. Cloning a cable descrambler box is perfectly OK. Using it to steal cable is illegal, though I take issue with people saying "stealing" satellite is wrong (to me, if you beam RF into my house or property, I can do what I want with it. If you don't want me to look at your signal, don't broadcast it.)
