All you need to envision is a open-top box full of sand. In this box you put a plinth (platform) that is slightly smaller than the opening in the top of the box - that way the plinth sits atop the sand, but doesn't touch any of the sides of the box.Using spikes between the sandbox and the floor isn't redundant, it's consistent. You use them there for the exact reasons you use them in other places in your system. Why would you question the spikes between the sandbox and floor and not the ones between the rack and sandbox? They all help to reduce the amount of chaos that ensues when you casually couple things together.
