Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ.

Unfortunately....

I have very little experience with commercial vibration management products. Almost all of my experience is with DIY solutions, which is why I tend to write from a concepts and best practices perspective rather than comment on specific products/brands within a product class/category.

The other reeason I avoid talking about specific brands is that there are too many variables contributing towards what works and what doesn't for any particular person in a particular system, and some of the factors don't even involve audio (such as usability issues - someone with frisky pets or small children would tend to avoid putting a floor-standing speaker on rollers, for example).

I know this is a somewhat useless response, but regardless of anything I were to say, you really have to try these types of tweaks in your own system to know whether they work fo ryour ears in your system or not. I would not purchase this type of product unless you are able to return it in 30 days for full refund on a satisfaction basis.

As for some general advice, I do that that which is not isolated, either via compliant materials or mechanical methods, should be rigidly coupled. Even within isolation schemes, attention should be paid to coupling, particularly in the vertical direction. For instance, in my roller ball and platform combo, the components are rigidly coupled to the balls, the balls are rigidly coupled to the cups, the cups are rigidly coupled to the platforms (via three feet I built into my rollers - these act like small cones), and the platforms are rigidly coupled to my rack (via cones). My rack is rigidly coupled to the sandbox via spikes, and the sandbox is spiked to the floor thru the carpet. One may think, "What's the point of spiking the sandbox if it's supposed to be isolating?" The short answer is since there is no isolation method implemented between the sandbox and carpet, rigid coupling should be used, and three spikes is one of the most effective ways to do this. If I hadn't spiked the sandbox thru the carpet to the floor, I would be making the sandbox's job more difficult.

Is this confusing enough?
