In Reply to: Jon Risch and others: power handling abilities of a Risch filter with four inductors. posted by mark maloof on December 14, 2004 at 23:44:13:
Well, a dedicated line would be nice, but I live in a NYC apartment (over 100 apartments in the building!), so I imagine that it would not be possible, or would be expensive. If it would be possible, and I could do it for $500 or less, I would. Anybody who lives in a city apartment who tells me it can be done may inspire me to seek this out. At least the duplex outlet is on its own breaker on the ciruit box (all it shares is a hallway light.) So here is what I'm thinking of doing:1) Risch filter (and later maybe a balanced power filter before it) for tube pre and SACD player (which will also be on a diy isolation transformer), and electrostatic panels (turntable runs on a battery.)
2) a DIY quad box (two duplexes) for the Innersound amp and Monarchy monoblocks/Music Reference RM9 tube amp (when I switch off from the Monarchys for a different sound.) NOTHING but straight AC to the duplex outlet feeding the Innersound amp, but an AC-rated cap on the duplex for the Monarchy Monblocks/Music Reference amp. That way, the electostatic panel amps get a bit of filtering (besides the Quiet Line filters around the apartment.) The Innersound amp, per Al's experience, will get no filtering. The source components will get fill filtering (and balanced power at some point), plus iso transformer for digital. Sounds ok, huh?
So my question: what value of cap (s). I know Chris Venhaus recomends two .47 Auricaps in parallel, but even he states they are not AC rated, and so there could be risk. Any AC rated power caps you can recomend that, um, "sound" good, and what value and voltage should I go with? Should I "double up" caps? I place the cap(s) leads across the hot and neutral on the ac duplex outlet, right? Also (silly question?), in regards to the duplex for the Monarchy/Music Reference amps, should I break the tab and seperate wire each outlet of the duplex to the incoming power cable? I "starwired" the duplexes in the quad box I made for my source components, anything to be gained in starwiring each of the two seperate outlets in the amp duplex socket, or is that a waste of time (and an extra cap(s) for the duplex.)
